The Lakes of Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe tour with Walk With Me sees Killarney from the ‘inside out’. Commence your tour from Ross Castle and travel through the three lakes – Upper Lake, Muckross Lake and Lough Leane by open boat taking in the breathtaking scenery, woodlands, the wildlife, flora and fauna and nature at its best. Observe the white tailed sea eagles which were re-introduced into the Killarney National Park in 2007 with over 50 pairs released to date.
Observe and visit Innisfallen Island, home to a monastery founded in the 7th century by St Finian ‘The Leper’, and was occupied for approximately 850 years. The Monks on Innisfallen Island over the course of 300 years compiled The Annals of Innisfallen which chronicles the history and life in early Christian Ireland and is now stored in The Bodleian Library in Oxford University. Innisfallen Island is situated on Lough Leane – The Lake of Learning and Killarney’s largest lake.
Pass through the Meeting of the Waters, listen to O’Sullivan’s Cascade, observe the colour of the Oakwoods and purple of the heather and rhododendron on the mountains. Arrive at Lord Brandon’s Cottage for lunch and hike through the Black Valley and Gap of Dunloe to Kate Kearney’s Cottage.
The Black Valley is located in the MacGillycuddy Reeks and part of the Kerry Way, it is still a remote and untouched part of Ireland. The journey continues through The Gap of Dunloe which was formed 2 million years ago by glacial movements and brings you to your final destination at Kate Kearney’s Cottage where you can enjoy a pint of Guinness or Irish Coffee while you reflect on your day in ‘heavens reflex’.
